DID YOU KNOW?

According to published results of clinical studies (American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis. 2004 April), the use of hypnosis facilitates a more uncomplicated birth process. In a separate research study done by University of Florida counseling psychologist Paul Schauble, it was also found that women who learn hypnosis before delivering babies suffer fewer complications, need less medication and are more likely to have healthier babies than are women without hypnosis. Schauble's first study involved adolescents getting prenatal care at a public health clinic. A group of 20 patients who received hypnosis preparation were compared with 20 who were given supportive counseling and 20 patients in a control group who received only the standard prenatal care. None of the women who received hypnosis required surgical intervention in their deliveries, compared with 12 in the supportive counseling group and eight in the control group, he said. "Patients who are prepared for labor and delivery in hypnosis are more likely to absorb and benefit from information because they are in a relaxed, highly focused state," he said.
Hypnosis is used during labor and delivery to eliminate discomfort and fear associated with having a baby. Through hypnosis, the mind can be trained to recognize pain sensations as pressure. The mind can be trained to reduce discomfort and create your own anesthesia. The more relaxed a laboring woman feels, the more comfortable she will be during labor. Hypnosis teaches women to enter a state of self hypnosis at will and to create a natural anesthesia that is so effective there is no need for drugs in the majority of women using this technique. In the hypnotic state, the laboring woman relaxes deeply and goes deeper into herself. She learns to trust in her ability to birth her baby naturally, without fear or pain medication. Women using this method report feeling calmer and relaxed without fear and with far less discomfort.
Hypnosis for childbirth teaches a woman how to enter into self-hypnosis instantly, and create her own natural anesthesia whenever and wherever she needs it. This is important as any drugs taken by a laboring woman can be dangerous for her, and especially her baby. She has total control over her body, and is an active participant in her birth process. As labor progresses, she relaxes even more, goes deeper inside herself, trusting in her body's natural ability to give birth with ease and comfort. Her mind is programmed to give her exactly what she needs.
There are several benefits associated with using hypnosis in child birth. Labor tends to be shorter because the mother is relaxed and doesn't tense her muscles. Tensing makes labor last longer because your body is actually working against itself. Women using hypnosis ask for drugs less often and there is less chance of the risks associated with drugs in childbirth. The overall environment created by the mother results in a calmer birth experience.
In other cultures, childbirth is regarded as a natural, normal event in a woman's life. The birthing women are given support from other women, and children are often present to witness the event. In this way, birth is celebrated and honored. Young girls then grow up with the belief system that birth is a positive event and their expectations of childbirth reflect this attitude. As a result, their births are similar to their predecessors; without pain and fear. They have a positive expectation of childbirth. In our culture, it is very much the opposite. The prevalent attitude in our culture tells women that delivering a baby is the most painful thing she will ever experience, to be faced with fear and trepidation. We have heard stories from well-meaning friends, family members and strangers seem to delight in sharing every horror story they have ever heard with expectant mothers. As a result, many go through pregnancy afraid of the birth experience. And so the legacy continues. We experience pain in childbirth, in part because we very much expect to!
When learning about how the mind controls the body, the birthing team is taught to surround themselves with only positive people and messages, to create a positive view of childbirth and the expectation that their birthing will be the beautiful, peaceful experience that they want. Fear Clearing Sessions are integral to this process, as they allow each person to address fears they have, work through possible solutions and then release them. Fear in labor can create tension, which creates pain, then more fear, and the cycle continues. Fear and anxiety can also create adrenaline production in the body, causing the labor to become dysfunctional, a common reason for Cesarean Section surgery. Freedom from fear can make a huge difference in the birthing experience.
The benefits of "Hypnotic Child birthing" Program:

Eliminates the 'fear - tension - pain syndrome' before, during and after birthing.
Shortens the first stage of labor by several hours
Eliminates fatigue during labor, leaving the mother fresh, awake and with energy for the birthing due to total relaxation throughout the birthing process.
Promotes special bonding of the mother, baby and birthing companion.
Promotes more rapid postnatal recovery.
Creates a more integral role for the birthing companion.
Fewer drugs or no drugs at all means less risk of side effects on mother and baby.
A calm, peaceful birthing environment.
Breech and posterior babies can be turned using hypnosis.
Fewer interventions and complications during labor.
Babies who are better sleepers and nursers due to fewer drugs in their systems.
What you will learn.
Relaxation and self-hypnosis to eliminate the fear and tension that cause a long labor and pain.
That pain need not accompany normal birthing.
Why women in other cultures have birthing almost entirely free of discomfort.
How the mother's body is designed to work in harmony with nature throughout labor.
Techniques of deep relaxation during and between uterine contractions.
The importance of prenatal bonding.
Session one involves "dehypnotizing" the fear factor and building a positive expectancy. The "Fear - Tension - Pain Syndrome" is explained and dismantled. The process, physiology and the historical and cultural background of the current western approach to childbirth are explained. Explicit video of painless childbirth's using relaxation techniques are shown and the idea of hypnosis is introduced.
Session two is primarily involved with teaching the mother hypnosis and "a comfortable self awareness" while session three deals with relaxation, visualization and imagery aimed at preparing the body and bonding with the unborn child. The birthing partner reinforces the hypnotic techniques in this session.
Session three confidence and empowerment is increased in both the mother-to-be and the birthing partner, beliefs and techniques are integrated and an individual "Birthing Plan" is developed. The birthing partner perfects the learned hypnotic skills and the team can demonstrate and rehearse the process.
Session four takes place a couple weeks prior to the expected birthing day to resolve any concerns and answer any other questions that may have arose. It is preparing for the ultimate celebration of the miracle of life.
It has to be emphasized that this is a collaborative method of childbirth, not an alternative. It does not preclude the introduction of medical intervention if it is required. However unnecessary medical intervention proposed for expediency or the convenience of the hospital or staff is not endorsed.
The focus of the program is to return to women their right to call upon their natural birthing instincts and enjoy a calm, serene and memorable birthing experience.
Your level of dedication will have a lot to do the success of hypnosis in labor. The more you practice, the better your results. Another factor is when you start. The earlier in pregnancy you begin studying hypnosis, the better you will become at the technique. You can still do it later in pregnancy, but the sooner you start the better.
Too good to be true?
Can women give birth without experiencing discomfort? They can, but there are many variables in labor and birth that can affect the outcome, and birthing teams need to have a positive but realistic view of hypnosis for childbirth. Each pregnant woman and her coach must take responsibility for the choices they make while in labor and how they can affect the dynamics and outcome. Many a wonderful birth has been thwarted by not realizing how to make positive, informed choices, and yet these issues are easily addressed and learned in a good consumer oriented childbirth class, or by doing research.
Without a doubt, women using hypnosis are much calmer and more relaxed during labor, which automatically creates more comfort, as well as having powerful post-hypnotic suggestions to actually eliminate discomfort and fear. With adequate preparation and trust in the natural process of birth, most women can have much more relaxed and comfortable births, with many actually free of discomfort.
